The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold its presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
This announcement was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, after a significant meeting with the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
The decision was unanimously endorsed by the party’s National Council.
“The Committee also spoke about the time for our presidential primaries. And again, the Committee agrees that that decision does not warrant amendment of our Constitution. And the National Council today also made the decision that the date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries,” Mr Kodua stated.
He highlighted that the timing of the primaries is within the authority of the National Council and does not need any additional clearance from the national delegates’ conference.
A range of candidates, from seasoned politicians to fresh faces, are expected to enter the contest to lead the NPP into the upcoming electoral cycle.

These primaries represent a crucial step for the party as it gears up for a potential return to power.
In the following weeks, the party plans to release comprehensive guidelines detailing the nomination process, schedules for campaign activities, and a code of conduct for all candidates. Party leaders have committed to ensuring that the process is party-based.
Additionally, a nine-member committee, headed by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu, has been formed to manage the planning of the national delegates’ conference set for July 2025. This conference will address and potentially adopt various proposals for constitutional amendments within the party.
Kodua noted, “Because there is going to be a proposal or motion for amendment of our constitution, a planning committee has been put in place”.
The announcement regarding the date for the presidential primaries marks the beginning of what is anticipated to be a highly competitive political season for the opposition party as it navigates its strategy leading up to the 2028 elections.
In 2023, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the presidential primary with 61.43% of total valid votes cast, paving the way for him to lead the party in the 2024 general election.
