Four deaths have been recorded following communal violence in Zogbee in the Mion District in Northern Region.
Assemblyman for the Sambu Electoral Area, Alhassan Abukari in an interview confirmed the news about the deaths.
Mr Abukari revealed that the chaos surfaced from a misunderstanding over a portion of land.
He explained that the Regent of Mion, Alhassan Abdulai Mahamadu, gave the parcel of land for a mechanisation centre.
However, some community members kicked against the idea when attempts were made to clear the land for construction which resulted in the dispute.
The Assemblyman mentioned that earlier efforts by the Ghana Police Service to resolve the issue had proven futile.
“I called the police in the morning, and we went there, but we could not solve the issue, so they left,” he said.
He added that the people of Zogbee claimed they were farming on the land, but the land was found to be untilled.
“The people said they were farming on the land, but when we visited, it was not being farmed, and the police can confirm that,” he added in an interview monitored by Ghanaian Dailies on JoyNews.
Mr. Abukari added that gunshots were later heard in the community, resulting in fatalities.
The District Chief Executive for Mion, Mahama Samuel confirmed one death, noting that he saw the body while returning from a community visit. He said he ensured the body was transported to Yendi Hospital and later received reports of two additional bodies being discovered.
Mr. Mahama indicated that military and police forces have been deployed to the area, with more reinforcements expected.
However, residents have voiced their fear that the attacks could escalate if there is no strong security presence in the community.
