Social work students of the University of Ghana, Legon on Saturday, July 27, 2024, participated in a Disability Inclusion Campaign Walk to raise awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) and advocate for their rights.
This event, part of the course “SOWK444: Problems of Rehabilitation,” aimed to emphasize the
need to ensure the rights, safety, and well-being of PWDs in Ghana.
Throughout the walk, students engaged with the public to promote inclusivity and address
various misconceptions.
Ms. Mabel Charlie, a participant, urged attendees to “treat persons with disabilities with decorum, for they are capable, innovative, and powerful. Above all, we are all one people as human beings”.
Her message highlighted the inherent value and potential of
PWDs.
In addition, Mr. William Boadi emphasized the need for government action, stating, “The
government must consider persons with disabilities when planning architectural designs for
public buildings and ensure these plans are implemented to create accessibility for all”.
His comments underscored the necessity of integrating accessibility features into public
infrastructure.
The walk, which stretched from the University of Ghana’s main gate entrance to Atomic, saw
active involvement from many students, each contributing to the success of the awareness
campaign through their interactions with community members.
The event successfully underscored the importance of inclusivity and the collective responsibility of ensuring that public spaces are accessible to everyone.
The campaign marked a significant step in advocating for the rights and well-being of PWDs, aiming to foster a more inclusive society.
