Fare increment: Govt. to meet transport unions today amid rising fuel prices

The government is scheduled to meet all transport unions today, February 11, 2025, concerning their proposal to increase transport fares due to the ongoing rise in fuel prices.
This dialogue comes amid growing worries from both commuters and transport providers about the financial strain caused by unstable fuel costs and its repercussions on transportation services nationwide.
This development follows a recent statement from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), one of the country’s largest transport unions, which indicated that they have reached a point where fare adjustments are necessary due to a series of fuel price increases noted throughout January.
The GPRTU highlighted that the persistent surge in fuel prices, alongside other operational costs, has made it increasingly difficult for commercial drivers to sustain the current fare structure without revisions.

Addressing the press on Monday, February 10, the Transport Minister, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, emphasised the government’s dedication to engaging all relevant parties to reach a fair and equitable solution.
He expressed hope that a reasonable fare structure could be developed to address the needs of both transport operators and commuters.
“Tomorrow, we will be engaging them, and so I wouldn’t want to say anything about them till I have fully engaged them. But they are cooperating. If you watch over the news portals, you will see that they have written to their colleagues to give us some time, meaning that we are in the process of having a better understanding as to how much they would charge our passengers.
“So we are talking with them. Tomorrow, we will continue and do not want to make anything public because they are not here. I have their trust that they will work with us and we will get to some agreement or to some level that will be beneficial to all of us,” he added.
