Newly posted teachers protest at GES over unpaid salaries

A group of newly trained teachers from the 2022 cohort of Colleges of Education graduates staged a protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra on Monday, June 23, over delays in receiving their staff identification numbers and several months of unpaid salaries.

The aggrieved teachers said they had formally submitted a letter outlining their grievances but were left waiting for over two hours at the GES premises with no response or engagement from officials.

Tensions rose when police arrived and issued a three-minute ultimatum for the group to disperse. The teachers refused, prompting officers to forcibly remove them from the premises.

Despite the confrontation, the group remains resolute.

They have announced plans to escalate their protest by presenting a petition to the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, followed by a march to Parliament to further press their demands.

“We’ll stay overnight and head to the Finance Ministry in the morning, then proceed to Parliament. When the MPs arrive, we’ll make it clear what we’ve been subjected to. All we want are our staff IDs and the salaries we’re owed,” one of the protest leaders said.

The teachers insist they will not relent until the government fulfils its obligations.
