Online blackmail: 226 victims lose over GH₵112K in six months

By: Bernard Konadu

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA), has witnessed a significant surge in online blackmail cases, with 226 victims losing GH₵112,209 in the first six months of 2024 with an additional 141 reports filed between March and June.

A statement issued by the Authority on July 31, 2024, indicates that threat actors typically use social media platforms to establish friendships and build trust, eventually luring victims into intimate relationships.

They then secretly record nude video calls and use this sensitive content for blackmail, demanding money to prevent the release of compromising material.

The CSA has advised people to be cautious when using social media by refusing to accept friend requests from unknown individuals and using strong passwords to secure their data.

The CSA’s alert serves as a crucial reminder to remain vigilant and protect oneself from the pervasive dangers lurking online.
