Police Attacked Rights Activist Lawyer Akinwole Okenile
A Lagos based lawyer and human rights activist, Akinwole Okenile was brutally attacked by the police in Lagos, whilst delivering his keynote address at the workshop organized by Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equity (WISE) which was held on 16th August, 2024.
Barr. Okenile said same-sex marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013 is a gross violation of both municipal and international legislations on human rights. He stated that everyone should be allowed to go to heaven the way he or she likes.
He added that its Secretariat had already been closed by the security operatives, while officials were scampering for safety from human rights abuses by the police.
Earlier at the event, the (LGBTQ) activist was heard supporting a group suspected of promoting LGBTQ. Okenile faulted the continued arrest and detention of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer members by the police.
The conversation took a more compelling dimension when the wife of the astute lawyer was linked with LGBTQ activities.
Consequently, the police authority has thundered that a couple of arrests would be made with a view to investigating and prosecuting the promoters of the LGBTQ.
