Smith Gyekyi, a police officer in the International Relations Directorate (IRD), has surrendered to the Amasaman Police Station after fatally shooting a 25-year-old man at Koans Estate in Accra on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
The incident took place around 3:00 am when Gyekyi was driving a commercial Matiz vehicle with the registration number GW 6459-21. He had picked up a passenger, Esther Owusua, from Ablekuma Joma, who was heading to the Koans Estate area.
Upon arriving at the estate, Owusua realized she had lost her way and called Stanley Ahadzi, the deceased, for assistance. When Ahadzi arrived at the estate gate, a disagreement reportedly arose over the fare charged by Gyekyi.
The argument quickly escalated, leading to Gyekyi allegedly drawing his firearm and shooting Ahadzi without provocation.
Following a distress call, crime scene investigators were dispatched to the scene. Ahadzi was found lying on his back, with multiple gunshot wounds and his body covered in blood. His body was later taken to the Police Hospital morgue, where it is being preserved for an autopsy.
Gyekyi has been detained, and his pistol has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, visited the deceased’s family on Sunday, August 18, and assured them that justice would be served.
