Stop photocopying Ghana Cards; it’s illegal – NIA warns

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has cautioned institutions to desist from photocopying the Ghana cards of individuals who need their services.

According to the Authority, it is illegal and inappropriate, insisting that institutions must rely solely on the official biometric verification platform provided by the NIA instead of making physical copies of the card.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Emmanuel Ampomah Dallas, expressed concern over the continued misuse of Ghana Cards by some entities.

“Unfortunately, most of these institutions, instead of subscribing to our verification platform and getting the right information, have resorted to taking the physical cards from applicants and making photocopies,” he noted.

Mr. Ampomah Dallas further urged organisations that require ID validation to use the NIA’s biometric systems, which are designed to ensure secure and accurate identification of individuals.

The Authority firmly indicated that the correct usage of its verification system protects both institutions and individuals from fraud, identity theft, and data misuse.

NIA further admonished the public and private entities to register with the platform and abandon outdated, unauthorised practices like photocopying the Ghana cards henceforth.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) is a statutory body established by the National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707), to create, maintain, provide and promote the use of national identity cards commonly known as Ghana Cards for the advancement of economic, political and social activities in Ghana.
