UTAG, TUTAG and CETAG threaten strike over delayed research allowance

Three major unions representing tertiary education in Ghana, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), have collectively issued a warning of a nationwide strike if the government does not disburse their book and research allowances by June 13, 2025.

In a statement released on June 9, the unions voiced their concerns over what they called the “unjustified delay” in providing the exchange rate needed to calculate these allowances.

They highlighted the significant uncertainty and frustration this situation has caused among their members, many of whom rely on these funds for their academic and research endeavors.

During a meeting on June 8, the unions decided that while they are willing to accept the delayed release of the exchange rate, they firmly reject any extension of the payment deadline beyond September 2025.

They emphasized that these allowances are a statutory requirement defined in their Conditions of Service and not merely a discretionary favor.

The unions further cautioned that if the government fails to meet the June 13 deadline, it will be regarded as an official notice of a strike, leading to industrial actions across all campuses affected.

They urged the government to take immediate action to prevent disruption of the academic calendar and ensure the well-being of lecturers and the broader educational community.
