Why Korle Bu rushed to repair surgery department elevator

Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has swiftly repaired the malfunctioning elevator in the Department of Surgery.

This move comes after Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, paid an unexpected visit to the facility on September 2, 2024, to ascertain the suspension of services at the hospital.

At the facility, Mr. Akandoh witnessed a dilapidated elevator which he claimed was affecting the hospital’s ability to conduct emergency surgeries efficiently.

Subsequently, he issued a 24-hour ultimatum to management to repair the faulty elevator.

A few hours later, the hospital’s management in a Facebook post announced the successful repair of the elevator, with the caption, “The elevator at the Surgical Department has been fixed today and it is now working”.

Meanwhile, the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital ( KBTH) has denied reports suggesting that it had suspended emergency surgeries at the surgical department due to broken-down elevators.

The hospital explained that despite ongoing repair works on the elevators at the Department of Surgery, all surgical emergencies and urgent cases were being attended to prominently.

Additionally, those who were already on admission due to surgery were being attended to.

The hospital, therefore, urged patients and the public to disregard the “misleading information” suggesting that emergency surgeries have been suspended.
